Privacy Notice

  1. Home
  2. Privacy Notice

This notice explains what personal information Environmental Diversity ("we", "us") collects when you visit environmentaldiversity.org, what we do with it, and the choices you have. We try to collect as little as possible.

What we collect

When you read the site. Like every website, our servers and our network provider receive technical information each time a page is requested: your IP address, the page requested, the time, your browser's user-agent string and the referring page. This is kept in short-lived server logs used to keep the site running, investigate errors and block abuse.

When you write to us. If you use the contact form or email us, we keep the name, email address, subject and message you send, and for the form also the IP address it came from (to stop spam). We use this only to read and answer your message.

What we don't collect. We don't build profiles of readers, we don't use advertising trackers, and we don't ask for, or want, sensitive information such as health details. Our network provider measures page speed and traffic in aggregate, without cookies, so we can keep the site working well.

How we use it

  • to deliver pages and keep the site secure and available;
  • to read and respond to messages you send;
  • to detect and prevent spam, fraud and attacks.

We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not share it with anyone for their advertising. We don't use it for automated decision-making.

Who else sees it

  • Hosting and network providers. Our site is hosted on a rented server, and traffic passes through a content delivery and security network (Cloudflare) that protects the site from attacks. These providers process technical data on our behalf.
  • Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our readers, contributors or the public.

Some stories and gear lists link to products on Amazon or to stores in the CJ Affiliate network, and some stories carry one partner banner labelled "Supported by". If you click one of these links and then buy something, we may earn a commission. It costs you nothing extra.

  • Amazon. Environmental Diversity is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. When you follow one of our Amazon links, Amazon sets its own cookies on amazon.com to record that the visit came from us. Amazon's privacy notice covers what it does with that information.
  • CJ Affiliate. Links to partner stores, and the partner banner images, are served through CJ Affiliate's servers (Commission Junction). When a banner loads or you click a partner link, CJ and the store may set or read their own cookies to attribute a sale. Their privacy policies cover that data.

We never see what you buy, your payment details or your account with those companies. We only receive reports of clicks and commissions, without your name. You can block third-party cookies in your browser; the links will still work, but the store may not be able to credit us.

How long we keep it

Server logs are rotated and deleted within about 30 days. Contact messages are deleted once they are dealt with, and at the latest after two years.

Your choices and rights

You can ask us to tell you what information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, by writing through the contact page. Residents of California and other U.S. states with privacy laws have these rights under those laws; we extend them to everyone. We won't treat you differently for using them.

Children

The site is written for adults. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Our stories link to other websites. Their privacy practices are their own; please read their notices.

Changes

If we change how we handle personal information, we will update this page and the date below.
